What is your duty?

30% of surveyed general practitioners (GPs) and polyclinic doctors felt that they should not have to look after patients at the height of a pandemic. 20% would stop work to avoid risking infection and some would even quit their jobs. These reported figures in The Straits Times kinda shock me. Aren’t doctors, who have taken the Hippocratic Oath, suppose to be the ones to respond during times of need?

We are, after all, not living in Utopia. Doctors, who are children, parents, siblings, friends and relatives themselves, are also human. They also have have a duty to protect their love ones and prevent them from harm. However, doctors have to realise that they hold great responsibility and ordinary citizens look to them when in need. That is why they hold such high social status and any parent would be proud to have a child who is a doctor. Putting on that white robe entails offering of service in trying times.

On a smaller scale, advisers too have to remember that they hold a responsibility to address their clients needs. It is not product pushing, meeting sales targets, or generating high commission for yourself. Some people might join the industry for reasons like flexible working hours or the job nature of meeting different people. Some may be trying out a new industry not knowing what else to do after leaving a job. Sure, advisers have families and need to provide for the love ones too. But for whatever reasons, advisers must remember their duties when they decide to join the industry. For what you are doing could affect the lives of generations to come.
