Victim of Phone Scam

Written By: Tiang Chuan on July 4, 2010 3 Comments

My friend’s (Winnie, not her real name) father was a victim of an overseas phone scam about 6 months ago. The scammers started by calling the victims and claiming that the are among 12 people in the world who had been drawn to be the lucky winners in a lucky draw. To claim the prize money, they have to pay some admin fees.

Winnie’s father sent some money and went to Winnie for more money as they had joint accounts. On discovering her father’s intentions to send more money, Winnie transfered the money to her other private accounts. The scammer even had the cheek to call Winnie’s father and questioned Winnie’s intentions by refusing to hand the money and blocking his way to a fortune, right in the presence of the family! Her father got angry refuse to talk to Winnie and even complained to their relatives that Winnie had cheated him of his savings.

Even thought Winnie made a police report, there was no response from the police for 3 months. The response after 3 months was to ask for information which was provided when the report was first made.

Till today, Winnie’s father still refuses to talk to them.

Unbelievable story. Daughter tried to protect father from the scammer and now he’s angry with her!?! I thought this kind of “you win prize but must pay money first” scam should be very well known. If it is a true prize money then please ask the overseas guy to deduct the admin fee from the prize money.

Maybe its due to ‘face issue’…

When my friend went to the police, they say that the scammers even call the police station! Yet they are taking such a laid back approach to such cases….
